A few minutes later the girls got back into the car, we backed onto the highway facing Blytheville and pulled into drive. Nothing happened. I pushed the gear shift into reverse and we went backwards, pulled it into drive, still nothing. After working with the shifter several times I realized we weren't going forward to anywhere.
After becoming aware that "drive " was not going to take us anywhere I pushed the shifter into reverse and made a u-turn in the highway. Then driving backwards with my left hand on the steering wheel, my right arm on the back of the seat, and my eyes on the highway behind us we headed to Blytheville.
The traffic on Highway 18 wasn't very heavy that afternoon, but occasionally a car headed in our direction. We backed off of the highway and waited until it passed, then backed out again and headed on.
The last fifteen miles of our trip to Blytheville was much slower than usual that day. But a slow trip was better than being stranded on the highway and waiting for help. The girls and I laughed over the unusual ride we had, and we got some funny stares when we backed up the drive in front of the office.
