We were visiting a small backwoods church in the hills of Arkansas and they called on a young man to sing. When he walked to the platform, picked up the guitar, and held it near the end of his nose to see how to tune it, we had no clue of the amazing talent he had. Then when he started singing we were spellbound. Some time later Rev. Ronnie Smart came to live with my parents so Dad could introduce him to other ministers and churches.
The talent to hear someone start singing or playing a song and tell you the key they were in is rare, but Ronnie could do that, and he could recognize voices. Even if he had not seen you for a couple years, when you started talking, he knew who you were.
Ronnie ministered in song, music and preaching from coast to coast and was extremely sensitive to the Spirit of God. Sherlyn mentioned one incident where they started singing a song one night. She said they made it through one verse when he told the musicians to stop, then he switched to another song. Before they made it through much of that song a man came running to the altar and the presence of God took over the service.
We admire a person with a handicap who is not handicapped by it. Ronnie was that kind of person. And he had a great sense of humor. (Of course anyone without a sense of humor would be in trouble at the George home.) He said he was the only smart man we knew. He enjoyed the pranks we pulled on him.
Rev. Ronnie Smart was a special treasure to us and will be missed. But now he is God's special treasure.
