Through the thirty-four years straight, that Mom had kids in school, she would call your name once to wake you. If she came back and you were still in bed, she was out of there and back, in a heartbeat, with a cup of cold water. Our feet hit the floor quickly when that hit us.
The cup of cold water always worked, that is, almost always worked. Joel was in high school and had evidently played dodge ball enough to hone his skills. When Mom came back for him, she would toss the cold water, but he would dodge it every time.
Mom realized that the cold water trick, she had used for years, to get us kids out of bed wouldn't work for Joel. So she set her mind to thinking of a new strategy, and decided something new to try. Mom didn't know how GREAT her new plan would work.
Secretly Mom put a bowl of marbles in the freezer and left them overnight. The following morning she called Joel to get ready for school. Of course she knew he would still be sleeping when she walked back into his room.
When Mom walked into Joel's room that morning, she raised the edge of his blanket and tossed. Of course Joel, assuming cold water was coming his way, rolled quickly across the bed. But there was no water to dodge, instead frozen marbles rolled with him.
Joel yelped when the frozen marbles rolled with him and stuck. So he rolled the other way to get away from them, but they rolled and stuck. He was rolling from side to side and yelping like a dog treeing a coon. Quickly, Joel realized there was no getting away from the marbles, and came out of the bed. Mom said she never had trouble getting him out of his bed again.
