Out of Gas

On a bitter cold day in the winter of 1975-1976 Dayna, Darlene and I had been to Benton, Arkansas and headed back to Jonesboro when we ran out of gas. We had made the trip before on the same amount of gas, but the fuel pump was messing up and caused it to use more.  It left us stranded on the side of Highway 49 between Hickory Ridge and Waldenburg and the weather was cold, windy and becoming icy.

With no gas in the pickup we couldn't run the heater, and I knew the temperature would drop quickly. The girls had their coats on but I had them to scoot close together, then wrapped my coat around them too. They sat huddled together  while I got out to flag down a passing motorist.

Standing on the edge of the highway with the wind whipping around me I looked at my two babies in the pickup and started praying. I prayed for warmth for Dayna and Darlene, for safety for us all and for God to send some good person to help us.

With the weather so bad there were very few cars on the highway. But eventually a car stopped. Still whispering a prayer I walked to the door and explained the situation to the couple inside. Then I asked if I could give them gas money and them bring it back to us. They talked me into getting the girls and me into their car, and they would take us to get some.

We got to Waldenburg and the service stations were closed. Though the couple were from another city they knew the owner of a station there. We drove to his house, he opened the station, and sold us gas. When I tried to pay for it, the couple who picked us up wouldn't let me.

God is more than enough for any need or situation we face.

  1. This is terrible! I can only imagine the terrifying situation you were in while waiting for someone to help you out. It was very kind of the couple to help you with your gas problem. I admire people who are really generous and never asks anything in return. Anyway, thank you for sharing this post with us. All the best!w
